Sun Valley was the grand idea of W. Averell Harriman, chief executive of the Union Pacific Railroad and future governor of New York. Harriman was looking for way to build passenger traffic to the West, and the avid skier in him wanted a location that evoked the old world charm of the European Alps. To find this gem he commissioned a team to search the country for the perfect site, and in 1936 (after the likes of Aspen, Yosemite and Mt. Rainier were passed up) Ketchum was "discovered".
Since its discovery Sun Valley has been attracting year round visitors by offering spectacular scenery, endless activities and European meets Wild West charm you will not find in other American Ski Towns. Through out the year there are many events that bring families, groups and individuals to Sun Valley. Just minutes away from the Sun Valley airport and a short drive from Boise Airport, Sun Valley is an easy destination to get to. Once you visit Sun Valley, you are guaranteed to return for years to come. Come to Sun Valley and see for yourself!
